About You

The first and main defense against influenza is the influenza vaccine. Recommendations for the use of influenza vaccines concentrate on two groups:

  1. Individuals at increased risk of influenza complications
  2. Individuals who can transmit influenza to persons at high risk of complication

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these two at-risk groups now include up to 65% of the US population or 200 million individuals.

The groups include:

  • Persons age 50 years and older
  • Healthy children 6 through 59 months of age
  • Anyone who is a household contact/caregiver of any of the above age groups, including those who are
  • household contacts/caregivers for children (newborn through 59 months old)
  • Persons with medical problems (e.g., heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, renal dysfunction,
  • hemoglobinopathy, immunosuppression) and/or people living in chronic-care facilities
  • Persons with any condition that compromises respiratory function
  • Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season (December-March)
  • All healthcare personnel
  • Persons who provide essential community services
  • Travelers at risk for complications of influenza who go to areas where influenza activity exists
  • Travelers who may be among people from areas of the world where there is current influenza activity (e.g., on organized tours)
  • Students or other persons in institutional settings (e.g., dormitory residents)
  • Anyone wishing to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza

The following groups should not be vaccinated without first consulting a physician:

  • People with a severe allergy to chicken eggs
  • People with a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past
  • People who developed Guillain-BarrĂ© syndrome (GBS) within six weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously
  • Babies under 6 months of age
  • People who have a moderate or severe illness with a fever should wait to get vaccinated until their symptoms lessen.
